Baby led weaning? Baby led feeding!

Updated: Mar 31, 2021

Can we all agree to change this term? Please? I am not weaning my daughter off of the magic boob juice (aka breastmilk) anytime soon. Baby led weaning is a term coined by UK author to describe a style of feeding for your new eater where they feed themselves. Like anything, there are pros and cons and it is not for everyone.

A lot happens for babe around 4-6 months of age. He may roll over, start sitting up more unassisted, and becomes more interested in what mom and dad are eating*. When the milestones begin to appear, it means it is now time to show your baby the wonderful wide world of food! A lot of parents start with a form of porridge, followed by pureed forms of fruits and veggies on a spoon. With BLW you give your babe chunks of food, sized just right for them to hold and grasp; or if you are like me, still holding the food for your little one.

A key to baby led feeding is making sure that the food is squishable. Think avocados, bananas, steamed sweet potatoes, the list goes on. This helps to lower the risk of choking. Your baby's esophagus is the size of your pinky finger! Be mindful of this when you are preparing and serving. Once baby really begins to get the hang of feeding themselves, foods should be cut to half the diameter of your pinky. Think THIN. Gagging is perfectly normal, as this is all new! It is also a reflex as the baby moves the food around in their mouths. If they continue to gag, back off a bit. Try smaller sizes, different foods, tastes and textures. It is also great to do a combo of baby led feeding with spoon feeding.

Keep in mind just because you are introducing your infant to solid foods does NOT mean to lessen formula and/or breastmilk! A great rule of thumb is to offer solids at regular intervals (think breakfast to start, add lunch and dinner as they age) and feed AFTER they have had their regular bottle/breast, as this is where they are still receiving primarily all their nutrients from.

I personally love this style, it works for us and I find it to be easier. One reason I love it is because baby eats what I eat. When I prepare my avocado and eggs in the morning, it is simple to put a small piece aside. Please no salt or seasoning for your infant! This is a very messy style so be prepared. Some moms find this way of feeding and eating to be simple and natural, others find it more stressful because of the level of mess, whether or not to keep track of amounts and choking. Do what is comfortable for you and babe!

*These are general statements, but important milestones to watch for before you begin solid foods. Your baby may do many things sooner, or later. Don't compare; rather let your baby show you!
